After the misstep that was Mario Party 10, Nintendo has gone back to basics with Super Mario Party. The competitive boards and minigames are back, along with a few welcome gameplay twists that make this party game feel like a fresh start for the series. From two-console minigames to the Joy-Con motion controls, the new Switch features elevate the entire experience, making Super Mario Partythe best in the series so far.

ND Cube takes a step back to return to the essence of the Mario Party saga with a delivery in which the strategy is again important, there are more game modes than ever and the mini-games are still fun. In addition, the benefits of Nintendo Switch are exploited in unique ways and risk for the first time with an online mode.

A good number of game modes, replayability value and tons of fun. Super Mario Party is, in fact, a super party for Nintendo Switch.

Mario Party has seen its fair share of good and bad over the years, but Super Mario Party swings the pendulum back in the right direction. The return of the classic style is a welcome one, and the plethora of different minigames hit the mark more often than not. It would have been nice to see another board or two, but the assortment of other fully-fledged modes helps to mitigate that feeling.

With impressive aesthetics and delightful character animations, Nd Cube has finally found its rhythm with Super Mario Party. Although the game isn’t without its issues, these are few and far between, making the eleventh instalment one of the best it has been in years.

This is a Mario Party that more than deserves that ‘Super’ prefix that’s been coming for so long, and that’s rather amazing.

Super Mario Party is a great debut of the party genre franchise on Nintendo Switch. Joy-Con control gets the most out of the console's capabilities while having a perennial smile in almost all of its 80 minigames. Super funny.

When it comes to multiplayer fun, you can't do much better than Super Mario Party. The variety of modes and mini-games is so phenomenal that you'll gladly boot it up whenever you have friends or family over. That is, until Super Mario Party 2 releases.
  14. 83
Super Mario Party is a good step forward for the series after the previous pale chapters. With this first episode for Switch, Nintendo wanted to look back to the past, especially in the first few games of the series, to bring out the simplicity and immediacy of the original gameplay. The operation has succeeded and is exalted by the peculiar characteristics of the console.

Super Mario Party’s new modes offer a welcome break from what some might consider the main attraction: the board game. They’re faster, and they focus on two of the Nintendo Switch’s strengths that make it such a special console in the first place — good Joy-Con motion controls and fun co-op play. For me, it makes this Super Mario Party the best in franchise history, even if I don’t care for the staid board game.

Super Mario Party is the Mario Party title we've all been waiting for, offering a fun and exciting experience for all the family. Although you may lose a few friends playing it, and the control scheme and online offerings leave much to be desired, there is plenty of content on offer and endless hours of fun to be had. Be sure to give all of the new modes a try, and explore all that the interactive plaza has to offer. Just don't spend all your coins at once, or you could be all out of luck..!
  22. Making brilliant use of the Switch console's various gimmicks while also finding several ingenious ways for four players to compete and co-operate in dozens of mini-games, Super Mario Party is the best this series has been in years.

Super Mario Party is a welcome comeback for the series that seemingly plays it safe with its modes, but still manages to be fun. The best way to sum it up what exactly is missing would be a lack of focus, as it feels a little bit like the teams were scattered and didn’t get together to discuss how to make each mode a little more in-depth. It still itches that party-game urge that Mario Party fans have been looking for and will continue to be wonderful to play for a good while to come.

Super Mario Party is, without doubt, the best entry in the series since the days of the GameCube. It’s stellar presentation, kooky sense of humour and fantastic mini-games make it for an exceptionally fun party game. Also in the game’s favour is that there is variation in the game mode’s hitherto unseen in a Mario Party. The game is plagued by a lacking amount of boards and a sometimes painfully slow pace but on the whole, there’s a fantastic multiplayer experience in there.

Super Mario Party actually does almost everything I had hoped for. More playable characters, finally again a classic board game mode, successful mini-game selection and last but not least two in my opinion successful co-op modes, which at least for some new paint in this but come a bit old game principle.

Super Mario Party is a joyous bounty of content picked out in lurid colours that comes together as a great way to play games with friends after a couple of drinks, or with younger relatives...However, it really only works as a multiplayer title with friends sat around in the same physical space. Strip that away, and you’re just shaking a Joy-Con in a room, alone.

Sitting squarely on the "fun for the whole family," end of Nintendo's spectrum, Super Mario Party is a joy. It's colourful, cheerful, and good-spirited, and backs that up with excellent board and minigame design. After a few iterations that were too experimental for their own good, Mario Party is back in form, and that has made me really happy.

Super Mario Party is a fantastic entry in the series, one that uses the unique attributes of the Switch wonderfully. The modes on offer are plentiful and varied and all a lot of fun. If you have been hoping for a good family game, then this is it.

Super Mario Party manages to get the series back on track in a big way, it’s selection of modes engaging, mini-games exciting and overall sense of fun high. While not every idea is a winner, it nails what fans have been after for many years while also injecting a few new twists of its own.

Super Mario Party retains the whimsical and hilarious nature of its predecessors while greatly expanding on its mini-games and their complexity. It’s a joyous time with a bunch of friends or family, even if you can’t actually get any better at playing due to its heavily randomised mechanics.

So, here’s the plan: invite your friends over, order some take out, crack open a cold one and have fun! Super Mario Party offers a wide variety of (generally) fun minigames, more than enough game modes and a couple of interesting ideas on how to use both the Joy-Cons and Switch’s features. It’s a great party game that will entertain the seasoned gamer and the newcomer as well.
  37. 80
The best Mario Party in a very long time, and while it’s shallow and silly it’s also one of the few times casual and core gamers can compete in perfect (dis)harmony.

This isn’t a cash-grab with Mario's face on the front; this is a well-constructed and beautifully realised Mario Party game which takes the series right back to its roots, but without being a straightforward rehash. There are a few interesting ideas that feel a little bit underdeveloped, but on the whole Super Mario Party is a true return to form.

Super Mario Party is the game that Nintendo fans have been waiting for. It has 80 fun mini games that can be enjoyed in an assortment of game modes. Sadly, it has a couple of shortcomings ―like a small selection of games and a poor online component― that hinder the experience.

Super Mario Party may not do everything perfectly, but it's easily some of the most fun I've had the Switch since launch. The boards are a bit dull but the overwhelming amount of great new minigames makes up for any short-falls with aplomb.

Super Mario Party could be the best game in the series. It perfectly utilizes the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch, providing a fresh and innovative iteration of what a party game should be. However, with the Switch’s Handheld Mode being deactivated and with a control system that rejects all other control input methods other than the Joy-con, it might not be enough to shine the way it should and win over the series’ veteran players.

If you've been eager to get more parties pumping with your Nintendo Switch, then Super Mario Party might be the game to make that happen. Though it could also make your friends throttle one another. Either way, good times are had, and memories are formed and shared. Poetry in motion.
  48. The modes and minigames are quite good, but I think the need to use Joy-Cons rather than traditional controllers could prove a little frustrating for people who only have two Joy-Cons and prefer using a bigger gamepad.

By ditching previous entries' clumsy attempts at innovation, Super Mario Party reminds us how fun it can be to crowd around a TV and roll dice with the Mushroom Kingdom crew.

Super Mario Party seems to be the right step back for the series. The focus is on the competition again, meaning the party is a lot more fun. The game is more accessible and yet offers more tactical gameplay. Too bad there aren't many boards to enjoy.

Super Mario Party delivers the couch multiplayer experience the series is famous for with an awesome new layer of strategy, 80 mostly-great minigames, and the quirky tech of the Switch controllers to keep things feeling fresh. The downside is that with the Switch’s controllers come some annoyances that make getting people settled onto your couch a bit more of a hassle than previous parties, and certain minigames are prone to annoying random upsets.
  53. Oct 3, 2018

Despite lackluster board design and side modes that can become repetitive, Super Mario Party is a fun group game that showcases a diverse collection of minigames.
  54. Oct 12, 2018
    70
Super Mario Party’s core Party mode and excellent minigames are the true Super Stars in this package. However, they’re diluted by the extra modes. While some are genuinely creative and engaging, such as the team-based Partner Party and the fully cooperative River Survival, others feel like afterthoughts. Everything included can still be hilarious fun with a good group of friends, but a sharper focus on the classic board game/minigame combo and an increased online presence would have enhanced its longevity. As it is now, Super Mario Party may not be the life of the party, but it’s a solid step in the right direction for this long-running series.
  55. Oct 10, 2018
    70
Super Mario Party builds up on the legacy of the now-veteran party game series and adds new and fun game modes, as well as a much requested online component. While it's unquestionable that this is an amusing and enjoyable game in the proper context, all aspirations are not satisfied. The cooperative and single player modes feel too repetitive and the online component is too simplistic. Nevertheless, the Mario Party series remains a flagship of the party game genre.
  56. Oct 5, 2018
    70
Most of Super Mario Party's varied assortment of 80 minigames are fun, especially if you've got a full group of four players, as the NPCs aren't smart or skilled enough to pose much of a challenge until you unlock Master difficulty. The new Partner Party, River Survival, and Sound Stage modes add enjoyable alternatives to Mario Party mode--which at least returns to its competitive roots.

Play it with friends, play it with family, don’t take it too seriously and for the love of God don’t play it alone. Stick with that ruleset, and Super Mario Party might just be the party game you’ve been waiting.

While the classic campaign only revamps the old, individualistic, yet outrageously randomised formula by developing few recent additions, Super Mario Party displays a more strategic approach through special dice dedicated to each character and cooperative modes. This episode also features diverse wonderful mini games that cleverly use the ergonomic particularities of the Nintendo Switch, with a solid competitive dimension even extended online, but the whole program lacks sufficient content to be really worthy of such superlative a title.
  60. 70
Super Mario Party has successfully stripped back a lot of the bloat that the last few iterations had introduced to return it back to the simple, fun and classic game that it was intended to be. At the same time, the game cleverly uses a number of key Nintendo Switch features making it a must own for Nintendo Switch owners that are longing for a game to play with friends and family.
  61. Oct 3, 2018

So that’s why we went back to 1-2-Switch. Super Mario Party has far more mini-games – and ones of higher quality, too – but it’s too time-consuming and tedious to get into them.
  62. Oct 16, 2018
    65
Super Mario Party is some of the most fun to be had with a local multiplayer game on the Switch. Unfortunately that is compromised by a deluge of limited modes and design decisions that pull the whole package down. Based the fun factor alone, Super Mario Party justifies its price tag for anyone looking for a new game to play with friends. However, Super Mario Party's fun factor well exceeds the title's fundamental design principles--so tempering one's expectations is a must.

Super Mario Party is a unique game for the Switch. It could've been the best game in the whole series, but the simplified boards and the friendliness nature of the game lessened the tension between players that made Mario Party very memorable in the first place.

    65
Super Mario Party features a large character selection, beautiful visuals, fun minigames, fresh new modes, and that fun, party-style gameplay - all of which is great. But I constantly found myself wanting... more. Maybe it's because I see what Nintendo is doing with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - with its massive roster, absurd number of levels, and so much more and I wish Nintendo would put that kind of effort into a Mario Party game. If you have three friends that are Mario Party fanatics - than there might be just enough here to satisfy the Mario Party craving for a while. Otherwise, it's really hard to recommend Super Mario Party - especially if you don't have anyone to play with, the stupid AI will just drive you insane.

There is plenty of fun to be had with Super Mario Party, if the circumstances are right. With four friends and the right mindset you will have hours of fun in front of you. Although if you prefer a fair game, can’t gather enough players, or want to play online the enjoyment falls significantly. In the end Super Mario Party might actually be the highlight of the series so far, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

The minigames of Super Mario Party are great, taking advantage of the Switch hardware in unique and creative ways. It's the dialed back board game and its lackluster extra modes that let the whole package down though. While it's still bound to be a great party game to break out when friends visit, it lacks the drama of the best in the series.

Super Mario Party is just a very safe game. It brings back the classic Mario Party board game form, marrying it with some of the better ideas from Mario Party: Star Rush, but it's light on the number of boards to play, lacks depth in other game modes, and misses opportunities for solo handheld and online multiplayer. It's Mario Party, but it's not particularly super.

Super Mario Party gets an enjoyable reinvention for the Switch, though it introduces as many problems as it fixes.
  2. Oct 3, 2018
Despite a few minor hiccups, Super Mario Party offers precisely what I wanted: a refreshed, ridiculous and majorly replayable virtual board game that won’t totally end my friendships, but might put a few at risk. It’s saturated with small (and large) touches that give the game character, but respectfully relies and improves on classic mechanics.
  3. Oct 3, 2018
On a console that feels like it’s starting to overflow with third-party releases, Super Mario Party is an essential party game to win over family and friends during the upcoming holiday season. This Mario Party goes back to what makes the series so captivating, and it feels like I’ve rediscovered why I enjoyed the first title almost 20 years ago.
  4. Oct 5, 2018
Super Mario Party isn’t a groundbreaking entry in the series, but it is fun. It offers the sort of party experience that other mini-game-driven Switch titles, like launch title 1-2 Switch, can’t match.
  5. Oct 4, 2018
In a largely non-narrative francise with so many entries, some redundancy is inevitable, but Super Mario Party” does iterate on the formula in some novel ways and, more importantly, offers imaginative options outside of its usual every-player-for-themselves Parcheesi with plumbers.

Super Mario Party is fun, but it leaves me a little bit conflicted.

On one hand, the classic gameplay that hasn't really been seen since Mario Party DS is finally back. In the main "Mario Party" mode, you go around boards individually collecting Stars. I (and many others from what I can tell) prefer this style of gameplay to the 'all moving in a vehicle' from Mario Parties 9 and 10. The other modes are nice additions too, and really take advantage of the Switch's versatility.

However, on the other hand, you're forced to use a single Joy-Con controller for each player. If you want to play Super Mario Party in handheld mode, with a Pro Controller, or with two Joy-Con via the Joy-Con Grip, you're out of luck. Since I find holding single Joy-Con awkward, this was a let-down for me, despite the many ways the controller is used (it's too small to play with comfortably in my opinion).

Still, control issues/limitations aside, Super Mario Party is a welcome return to form. It seems that fewer (if any) minigames this time are luck-based, which is a plus for me (I prefer games to be more skill-oriented).

Would be a great game to play with friends, if they don't mind the arguably awkward controls.
